I love performance. I love movement. I love dance.
Because it’s a shared experience. It brings people together.
I chose performing because something inside needed to be expressed. I couldn’t stay bottled up inside and not share my experiences to the world or another. For me, It’s a way of giving truth, hope, to awaken and receive a big YES, I get you!
Performing is a shared fulfilment in saying we are not alone, we’re in this world together. And how storytelling is part of navigating life lessons, ways, understandings and so much more. Storytelling is ancient, a way of communication. A way of discovering and evolving, creating.
As a performer, which is really the same as being human in my eyes, I listen to my body, how I feel, the story it tells me, the guidance, wisdom, information I receive.
Its no different to being the real me. Only that I get to explore something that’s outside of me rather than only me. And it’s the costumes, the make up and lights, camera, action that changes me from a physical stand point.
Sometimes I hear negative comments about what it means to perform, that it’s showy, fake, self absorbed etc. And sure there is that.
For me, Life is a lot more fullifiilling living in community and understanding all walks of life. To play a character, without judgement, I have to go inside and find it and look at ways to express it. Sometimes ugly, sometimes raw, sometimes beautiful and yes sometimes fake. It’s in all of us, these little nuances. It’s taking a deeper look to understand why someone is the way they are, without judgement and explore it. It’s been a true gift and humbling choice in my life. And like anything I get to choose at the end of the day what’s settling for me, come home to me and who I am too. Everything is always within to be moved out of you.
Learning technique gave me focus. It’s also a safe way to keep the internal in check. It gave me form and structure. It’s almost like what we use in everyday life, to operate our daily routine. It’s an action to take, to do what you do. It brings mind and body integration. It is there for when you need a ‘tool’ to use to take you into a direction or action.
Its all important and works together. Anyway that’s how I see it for today, in this moment to share.
Unfortunately sometimes other forces may shine it in a different light or use it to benefit them, or manipulate it to suit another agenda. It’s a complex world. But it’s always been about authenticity. Bringing truth to light and connection.
Phew so deep… but felt the need to express as there can be so much fear to performance, to dance, to move. Don’t let the outside world control you to express you. Keep it simple by taking action to enjoy your human experience. Your intelligence, creativity, it’s all within and to be used in anyway you choose that supports not only you but i’m sure others too.
I’m just one layer in the bigger picture. At the end of the day what I do as a performer or human, really might not change anyone but if I’ve had fun along the way and with others, and my intentions are in the right place then my ‘job’ is done.
So I also teach Nia movement, dance and mat pilates too, as they are techniques, a practice that supports my creativity, my health and wellness, both physically, mentally and spiritually.
I look forward to sharing more creativity, movement and community with you!
